But, if you’d like to consider a bit more before you decide to join:

You understand there are ambiguities which exist in our complex world, but you did not have a compass to help you find a balanced and creative middle path. Government and politics have become so complex. You don’t have the time to monitor your elected representatives and send them your ideas and express your values via letters and emails. It is difficult, if not impossible, for one individual to have much influence over such a complex human institution. But, some of you brave souls will try. AIMI will assist you.

The fringe parties offer our citizens little more than a choice between more government handouts or fewer government handouts; More re-distribution of income or less re-distribution of income; More regulations or fewer regulations. Less liberty or more liberty. Only if citizens are able to make intelligent and deliberate choices will they remain self-governing. For the last fifty years the two organized fringe political factions are increasingly less able to compromise and find creative balance in their deliberations.

Socialists extol the virtues of the state, collective responsibility, more government and higher taxation of income to enforce equality. Conservatives extol the virtues of the private realm and institutions, character values, limited taxation of income and smaller government to permit the pursuit of happiness and equality. Our society is a tapestry of diverse thought, and everyone contributes to build the whole society. AIMI will help moderates define and follow a middle political path.

What combination of private realm character, faculties and institutions – and public sector security, law, and republican constitutional values – will permit most citizens to achieve the level of dignity they seek for themselves and their family? What combination of individual faculties, character and public sector institutions will permit most individuals to create for themselves a society that, as to them, shall seem most likely to ensure their safety and happiness?

For the record…

Moderate individuals are tolerant of others. Because moderates do not promote every cultural idea or value (or fringe cultural values) does not mean that they are not tolerant of some other cultural values – especially those cultural values that do not require their income to make up for the shortcomings of other, less responsible, less successful cultural values.

And regarding tolerance, is there a veil of ignorance, or does every generation know what is required for the next generation to achieve character and achieve dignity? There is no veil. There is wisdom.

James Madison wrote about how best to determine the interests of the people (in Federalist Papers No. 10): The effect of a representative legislative body is, on the one hand, to refine and enlarge the public views, by passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of their country, and whose patriotism and love of justice will be least likely to sacrifice it to temporary or partial considerations. Under such a regulation, it may well happen that the public voice, pronounced by the representatives of the people, will be more consonant to the public good than if pronounced by the people themselves, convened for the purpose. On the other hand, the effect may be inverted. Men of factious tempers, of local prejudices, or of sinister designs [or of gerrymandered political districts established to favor one faction over another], may, by intrigue, by intended corruption, or by other means, first obtain the suffrages, and then consolidate and implement the interests of the faction.

All of the above, and more, are the issues with which An Independent Moderate Individual is concerned. These are the issues that cause us to seek a truly representative republican middle path for you and our society.

“…mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.” This is true for individuals and societies. AIMI supports, and seeks to strengthen, the shared good forms and private realm institutions to which we are accustomed. Our state and U.S. republican forms are effective because they are the institutions which most accurately reflect the deliberative consent and choices of the governed. We will continue to apply these forms to effect our safety and happiness.
