An Estimated 12 Million Migrants Are Living In The United States Illegally. Though They Are Here Illegally, There Should Be A Path To Legal Residency For Many

Posted on February 27, 2016 John Abood

There are approximately 3.4 million U.S. households headed by an illegal migrant. These illegal migrant households cost U.S. citizens an estimated net $14,000 per illegal household in government benefits each year (taxes paid by illegal households minus tax benefits received).

This equals a net payment of about $47 billion each year as our U.S. citizens pay for shelter, food, educating children, health care, public services, etc. Each legal U.S. household pays an average additional $410 in annual taxes to benefit 3.4 million illegal households.

In some cases illegal migrants are performing jobs that could be performed by citizens. For the above and other reasons, moderates advocate securing our borders and creating a path for some of these illegal migrants to become legal U.S. residents, not citizens. Illegal migrants should not be permitted to become a citizen of the United States by breaking our laws and then expect our citizens to ignore our rule of law. Our rule of law is one of the ideals that make us Americans, and successful as a society.
